Why we like it

We assembled this firewood rack a couple of months ago and immediately filled it up. It fits tightly together and doesn’t bend or bow when filled to the top. Of course, we haven’t been through a full season yet, but so far it was a great alternative to building our own out of treated wood. From our calculations, this metal firewood rack was a more affordable option than building our own as well, at least with current lumber prices.

This assembled in about 20 minutes. Preparing the ground took much longer, but we had to flatten a spot of land that was on an incline. We also leveled concrete blocks below the legs and middle supports to ensure the firewood rack sat flat. Finally, we bolted our firewood rack to the toolshed next to it.

We bought two of these firewood racks in 8’ lengths and put one behind the other. We bolted both of them into the side of our tool shed.

So far, I’m impressed. And I’m more than a little relieved to have reduced our workload on this project by buying a ready-to-assemble firewood rack. If you live in the mountains, you know how many projects are already on your to-do list, and how important firewood storage is.

One last thing. Each rack holds one face (one half) cord of wood, which means we can track how much wood we’re using, we can rotate our firewood to make sure we’re letting it age appropriately, and we know when we need to clean the chimneys. And, it comes with a pretty decent cover to keep moisture off your wood pile.

Some things to consider

Before you buy a firewood rack, make sure you have a good spot to set it up. If you need to prepare a new space, make sure your ground is level and you place pavers or blocks under the legs and middle supports.

Consider the size. We bought two 8’ firewood racks but you might need something smaller for a backyard, or much larger. You can find the Ultrahaus firewood rack as short as  4’ long.

How it impacts our prepping efforts

Our house is equipped with hydronic heaters—and they’re great. But we prefer to use our wood-burning stoves to lessen our reliance on external resources. And we’ve run into situations where we’ve had to use our wood-burning stoves because of power outages. Using a wood-burning stove a lot can gunk up your stove pipes and increase the risk of fire. We like knowing how much wood we’re going through so we know when it’s time to do a good chimney cleaning. We also like knowing we have enough wood prepared to get us through the cold season.

These firewood racks help us prepare for our winters now, and will continue to help us be self sufficient if the day comes that we can’t get our propane delivered or there’s a sustained power outage. They’ll also help us gauge the amount of fuel we’re using so we can reduce the risk of a chimney fire.
