May 17, 2022

Whether you're living a self-sufficient life or emergency planning, being able to dehydrate plants via the sun is important for food and herb preservation.

We found this on Amazon while looking for an off-grid option for drying herbs and foraged greens. You can get this off-grid solar dehydrator on Amazon.

Why we like it

The truth — this solar dehydrator was much bigger than I expected! It has the measurements in the listing, but the first time we opened it we were like, "Where and we going to hang this?" It didn't take long to find the perfect spot on a south-facing deck.

We're also surprised at how often we use this! We've dried so many foraged greens, chamomile, and echinacea. We've also dried flower tops to add to our chicken feed through winter months. And, now that my mint is taking off, I plan to dry some of that this summer as well.

We love that this drying rack, or solar dehydrator:

  • Is mesh so it keeps the bugs out.

  • Has zippered closures.

  • Allows air flow for quick drying.

  • Has plenty of space to dry lots of plants at one time.

  • Packs up very small and fits in a carrying case for storing.

How it impacts our prepping efforts

We enjoy foraging and gardening and by having a drying rack or solar dehydrator, we're able to preserve much more of our harvest and gathering. These dried plants and herbs can later be used in cooking, in making tinctures, and in teas. It can also be used to supplement chicken and rabbit feed when that's harder to come by.
