Why we like it

We got our first butane stove at a preparedness fair about 15 years ago. A small stove in a hard-shelled carrying case, it was perfect for quick campouts, power outages, and as a SHTF option as long as we had extra fuel stored away. We've used it a lot and even ended up buying one for each of our adult-aged children to add to their family preparedness kits. Theirs were an upgrade, being dual-fueled stoves that work on both butane and propane.

For the purpose of this review, we'll be talking about dual-fuel emergency stoves, butane and propane.

We really like that it:

  • Comes in a sturdy carrying case.

  • Uses butane or propane, both of which are easy-to-store.

  • Is compact and can fit in tight spaces.

  • Is easy to carry and pack.

  • Puts off enough heat to cook real meals.

  • Has an electronic ignition.

  • Propane and butane can be stored indefinitely.

  • Is durable. We've been using ours for years!

Our kids have used their stoves on camping trips and during power outages, They’ve also stored away the fuel they need to be able to use them in future emergency situations. And, if one type of fuel becomes harder to find, these emergency stoves can still function on the other.

How this emergency stove impacts our prepping efforts

In the short-term, we have a stove we can pull out and have fired up in minutes. It's also light-weight and simple enough to use. We’re confident that we can loan it to friends and family who may be visiting or camping on our property.

Though we have larger and more robust camp stoves, this stove is a small, easily portable cooking option in emergency situations. It's a great addition to our preparedness kit because:

  • It's easily portable when we can't pack up a big camp stove

  • It's simple to set up for people who may come up to "crash" on our property.

  • It's a great alternative to cooking over a fire when wildfire-risk is high.

  • It’s safe to use indoors as long as there’s proper ventilation.

Specs

This stove we bought for our kids is no longer available on Amazon, but this Grill Boss 90057 is comparable:

  • Has 12,000 BTU output.

  • Measures 11.5 x 13.5 x 4.5 inches

  • Comes with a carrying case.

  • Has an adjustable flame.

  • Has long, textured grates for stability.

As we mentioned, we gave one of these to each of our adult children for Christmas one year. Check out this list if you're interested in some more emergency preparedness gift ideas.
